Taking Pets On Road Trips - What You Need To Know

By Tim Lambert

No Heads Out Windows: It's very unsafe for you to let your dogs stick their heads out the window while you are driving. It is an easy way for your pet to get injured by flying debris form the road. You should also never let your pet travel in the bed of your truck. There are so many things that can go wrong (some not even your fault) that this is illegal is most states.

Stop Frequently: You should take frequent stops to let your pet walk around for a few minutes and use the bathroom. Most rest stops and travel assistance areas will have specific areas for you to take your pet. Always pickup after your pet and try to stay in the designated "pet zone" when walking your pet. Always keep your pet on a lease and make sure that they have proper identification on their collar whenever they are outside of the car.

Give Them Plenty Of Water: At each rest stop make sure to have some water available for your pet to drink from. Sometimes car travel will upset your pets stomach and this will give it something to help prevent sickness. Something that a lot of people recommend is to take ice cubes on road-trips as they're a fun way for your pet to get their needed re-hydration and it doesn't take up as much room as bringing lots of water will.

Dont Feed Them Extra: You should keep the snacks to a minimum on any long road trip. Fast-food and any other traveler-friendly eateries should not be seen as food sources for your pet. That means no feeding them leftovers as well! That type of food will typically result in poor bowel movement or worse, end up with a sick pet.

Don't Leave Them Alone In The Car: Don't leave your pets alone in your car while you run errands. On summer days the inside of your car can easily reach 120 degrees in minutes, even if you have the windows cracked open. Pet thieves also have been known to prey on pets left alone in cars at rest stops, so prevent their attempts by keeping your pets at your side.

Don't Let Them Run Around The Car: Always keep your pet safely restrained while in your car. Using a pet safety-harness or travel dog kennel are the safest ways to keep your pets restrained and out of harms way. These will not only keep your pet from injury, but they also prevent your pet from distracting you while you are driving. A pet safety harness works just like a regular seatbelt. Let your pet wear the harness for a while before you go on your first road trip. This will get them familiar with the harness and you'll be able to adjust it for optimal comfort. If your dog prefers a travel kennel, make sure that it has amble ventilation. If you have a large car or SUV, you might want to consider using a vehicle barrier. Always remember that the passenger seat is the last place your pet should ever be sitting while your car is moving.

Staying Safe and Comfortable: Comfort should be a priority regardless of how you choose to travel with your pets. Just as it's important for your seat to be comfortable on long road trips, your pet's seat should be comfortable too (by seat we mean seating area). Usually your pets favorite blanket or travel bed will do the trick to quickly put them at ease. If you don't mind spending the extra money, there are many different pet travel seats available that you can buy which are designed with your pets safety and comfort in mind. - 31851

You Can Train Cat! There Are Loads Best Methods For Toilet Training Kittens

By Franko Marko

If you have recently got a cute new pet in the shape of a kitten or cat then you are going to have to know how to housetrain them. There is nothing worse than finding cat litter all over your floor and in hidden places. It is important to start the training as early as possible, litter tray and toilet training cats can be a very long process, you will require patience and resilience.

To begin with you are going to have to get your new pet to use a litter tray. This should be a comfortable size for them so that they can turn around easily. You need to buy a litter product that absorbs the smell and is easy to clean. The tray needs to be put in an area of the house which is not difficult for the cat to reach as well as being out of the way and private. Do not keep it in the same location as the cat's food or where they sleep, also keep in mind the smells it may give off.

It is best to let them use the litter tray for a number of weeks before you start to think of training them to use the toilet. It is possible to train any cat to use a household toilet if you are determined. It is far easier to do this if you have more than one bathroom or toilet in your home.

Once they are comfortable using the litter tray you can move it towards the bathroom, if you are in a smaller property then you can do it in one go. You then need to let the cat get use to the new location, you may need to guide it at first. After another week or so you can start to raise the height of the tray. This is best done in stages until it is at the same level as the toilet seat. The tray should then be placed next to the toilet.

The next stage is a big jump for your cat so it may take some extra patience. You need to buy a litter pan which fits under the toilet seat. This should be filled with the exact litter as is in the tray. It may help to leave both the tray and the pan up for a few days and then take away the litter tray.

The final stage of the training is when you remove the pan completely from the toilet. This can be traumatic for the cat at first as the sight of a long drop filled with water can cause trepidation. You may have to give them a helping hand and encouragement.

It is possible to train a cat of any age to use a toilet but the younger they are the easier it will be. Remember that if you have a kitten it may be too small to safely use a toilet.

Remember that cats are territorial, they are likely to only use that one toilet in your home and not every bathroom that you have. - 31851

Should You Buy An Automatic Litter Box?

By Angela Suarez

The automatic litter box is a great idea and definitely a time saver if you have a busy schedule. Cleaning the litter box is not the most favorite chore in the world but is definitely important if you want your cat to stay happy and to keep using the box.

Be prepared to invest some money in this type of box. They are not cheap, but many owners claim that the costs are well worth the time it saves.

If you are searching for the best automatic box for your kitty and for you then ask yourself a few questions to see if it would be a good fit:

Do you want to be able to choose whichever type of litter that happens to be on sale at the moment?

Do you think your cat will have a problem with switching to a different litter?

Are you okay with buying refill cartridges every month or other month?

Remember that owning an automatic litter box does not free you completely from cleaning the litter box; it only lightens your chores.

When you opt for an automatic litter box and if you love to cut coupons and buy any old type of litter that is on sale, you will not be able to shop around for those new brands anymore.

You can no longer use just any litter you want, because your box will not work as well or might not work at all!

If you have no problems buying the same litter and are okay with the price of said litter then that is one less concern you should have that most users complain about.

Got a picky cat? If she does not like "new things," such as having her litter switched and perhaps having a brand new foreign, noisy box, then think about what her reaction might be to it.

If the electric box requires the use of crystals or hard pellets, realize that your cat may not like walking over something new (at first) if she is picky about her litter.

Elderly cats may even refuse to use litters such as large pellets or hard crystals.

One issue that some automatic box owners forget is the cleaning and maintenance issue. Just because the box is an automatic does not free you from cleaning it completely.

The box will definitely need to be cleaned regularly and cartridges or compartments that hold the poop will need to be either refilled or emptied out (depending on which box you choose).

If you purchase a box that needs cartridges replaced every month then consider the extra cost that it will add up to.

It is important to consider these little extras before you make that purchase, and if you still feel the advantages outweigh the extra cost then go for it! - 31851

What You Need To Know About Flying With Pets

By Dennis Marshall

Up until just recently, pets have only been welcome on airplanes if they're flying with the luggage stored beneath the plane. One of the main concerns we have with this old practice is that most luggage compartments aren't properly shielded to keep out the extreme hot and cold temperatures that occur during flight. This then goes from bad to worse if they're forced to remain locked in their cage for hours on end when your flight gets delayed. While you're up in the terminal trying to finish that book you brought they're suffering in a dark compartment with practically no room to move around. If a traveling pet becomes ill during flight there is no way of monitoring, let alone being able to assist the animal until the flight has landed in their scheduled destination. As you can imagine this has resulted in countless tragic pet deaths over the years. Due to the growing concern for animals traveling with their owners in the air, most airline companies now enforce stricter training for their baggage handlers, even requiring them to report any adverse incidents to the Department of Transportation. In addition to that most will refuse passage to animals during extreme weather and during the hottest months of summer.

If your pet is a small animal than you've got it pretty easy as far as travel preparation is concerned. The large majority of airlines these days will allow you to bring your small dog or cat with you onto the plane as long as both the animal and pet carrier weigh no more than 40 pounds and can fit underneath the seat in front of you (please don't even think of trying to put them in an overhead bin!). Due to allergies and passenger discomfort though there usually is a limit to the number of pets allowed on any given flight to if you're planning on taking your pet with you just make sure to notify them of your travel buddy as soon as possible.

Every airline tends to have different policies towards people traveling with their pets which include both pets traveling in pet carriers as well as larger dogs who have to travel in kennels beneath the plane. To be on the safe side, always contact your airline ahead of time to learn what their policies and conditions are so that you won't run the risk of endangering your pet. Airline personnel can also help you find the best flight time available to keep any changes in temperature to a minimal. For instance flights in the early morning or late evening are the best during the summer seasons.

Wether your pet is traveling with you in a pet carrier or below in a dog kennel there are a few precautions you should follow so that the experience is a pleasant one for both you and your four-legged friend. Make sure that you have your pet examined by a veterinarian no more than 10 days prior to your departure day. While they are there make sure your pet is all caught up with their shots, especially any rabies vaccinations as you'll be required by law to show proof of vaccination when you first arrive at the airport (so make sure you still have all the necessary papers, if not then have your vet provide you with temporary copies to use for the trip). It's also important to know that federal law prohibits airlines from allowing any animal thats younger than eight weeks old to travel on a commercial flight. Lastly, don't show up late to pick up your pet once they've arrived. It's not the airlines responsibility to take care of your pet once the plane has landed not to mention the animal is most likely in need of a bathroom break so be on time!

As far as what to look for in dog kennels just make sure whatever you get is a sturdy container with hard-walls and ventilated on at least two opposing sides (to allow for proper airflow circulation). Being free from any knobs on the outside is handy as it will catch on surrounding items less often when moving it. In addition to that your kennel should be marked with a large label at least one inch tall that reads "Live Animal" to let any baggage handler immediately know to take care when moving the container. For pet carriers you should look for ones that are just big enough to where your pet can stand up on all four legs, turn around and lie down without much maneuvering. Almost all pet carriers these days are made with airline regulations in mind so the key thing is to look for one that's sturdy on the outside by soft on the inside. That way your pet will have a little cushioning in case of a bumpy ride. Lastly both the kennel as well as any pet carrier should have a water-resistant bottom lining to contain any accidents that might occur if your pet becomes startled mid-flight. Even some of the best house-trained animals will have accidents sometimes when startled by a rough case of turbulence so it's better to be on the safe side. With both kennel and carrier you should also have papers either taped to the outside or placed in one of the side-zip compartments detailing your vet's contact information, any important medical or dietary requirements that your pet might require as well as a copy of your entire travel itinerary.

At the end of the day you need to remember that not all pets can handle the experience of traveling on a plane at high-altitude. Anything from sudden changes in cabin pressure to being in a confined space can result in your pet having a negative reaction to the whole experience. If your pet is the type that is sensitive to loud noises or other environmental changes then you might want to talk it over with your vet before committing to any travel plans. - 31851

The Most Captivating Features Of A Red Persian Cat

By Cynthia Turner

In the present time the different combinations of colors that the Persian cats coats have evolved into are categorized in order to be recognized with a little more ease.

The Persian cat families have been further divided into groups according to the color of their coats to make it easy for people to distinguish them. For example you will find Silver Shadowed, Golden Shadowed, Cameo Shaded and also Red Persian cats.

The majority of the Persian cats are white with generally layers of different colors on just the tips of the coat which is technically known as ticking. But since there is a lot of mixed breeding the coats of the cats can evolve into totally different colors like blue-cream.

Similarly another color that has evolved for the Persian cat is red which now recognized is to be the color that occurs in normal cats unlike albino whites which are considered very rare. It is not a vivid screaming red, rather an almost orange or rather ginger color, which can vary. This means that the cat could either be all red or could have traces and hints of either white or brown ticking. Mostly however, red Persian cats tend to be completely red.

The lips and chin of the cat are the same color as that of the coat. Its paw pads and nose leather is a brick red color and unlike Silver Shaded and Chinchilla Persian cats whose eye color is either green or blue-green, the Red Persians eye color is of a brilliant copper color. But it does, like the other Persian cats, have the blackened rimmed eyes that give off an impression as if the cat is wearing eye makeup.

You would see that red colors can occur with patches of different colors like cream, white and cameo as well. Let us take the Smoke Tortoiseshell Persian which has a layer of white under coat and deep black tips which stand out conspicuously with random patches of red and cream on the tips too which makes it look like a tortoiseshell.

It is absolutely fascinating to see this breed of Persian cat with various color patterns out of which some have cream ticking on the face or have a pure red face which is very popular.

The Tortoiseshell Persian cat is the only one along with the Red Persian cat category who are pedigree with copper colored eyes. Whereas the other families of the Persian breed, like for instance the Silver Shaded, Golden Shaded or Chinchilla have originally green or blue-green eye color.

The Red Persian cat tends to be fluffier as well, and has a large mane, but the same squat legs and stocky physic along with the punched face and darkened rimmed eyes. Its chin and lips tend to be of the same color as its coat. - 31851

Tips On Canine Training

By Dave Notting

If you are considering bringing a new canine addition to your home, there are several things to consider. Having the right tools and the proper training will make the transition to a dog-owner family easier on you and your dog. While it is viable to trains dogs yourself, those who don't have experience working with dogs will be wise to invest in a dog training course.

If you have heard horror stories from dog ownership, or viewed the show "It's Me or the Dog", make sure this doesn't become you. Whether a new dog, or one you own that has been running your house instead of you, then perhaps you are good candidates for dog training school. Often a dog will misbehave, not because it is a "bad" dog, but because of lack of training. Putting your pooch through a reputable training program will help make your relationship happy and peaceful.

Dog obedience school will provide both puppies and grown dogs the chance to socialize with other canines. Learning to interact with other dogs properly is important when taking your dog out for a walk. Going through a course will also introduce the owner to other owners for the opportunity to develop friendships, and possibly even find a playgroup for your dog.

Hair Loss and Your Dog

By Catherine V. Testaratti

Hair loss, usually referred to as alopecia, is a widespread ailment commonly found in dogs that results in minimal to total hair loss. At times it can be caused by trauma, inflamed hair follicle or an immune disorder. An early diagnosis can make the difference in the amount of hair loss so immediate treatment is necessary.

Hair loss, or alopecia, can cause severe damage to your pet's lymphatic and immune system so it's best to detect it early. This disorder affects all breeds and size as well as gender so watch for it in all pets. Early detection can prevent extreme hair loss and alopecia can start slowly.

Excessive chewing and symmetrical patches of hair loss are early signs of this condition. The areas can get infected quickly so you need to be diligent in seeking treatment for you dog. Early detection can keep this disorder from spreading.

Mange is the most common cause of alopecia. Mange is caused by the mite Demodex. Regular washing of your dog and constant checking for this condition can help to ward off any outbreaks. And remember, after checking your dog or applying treatment, proper hand washing is important.

Alopecia can show itself in many ways and for many reasons. A number of missing patches can be the result of an inflamed hair follicle. Extensive hair loss can be a more serious issue and you might need to have the dog tested. Unfortunately there is not a lot that can be done to prevent this.

Several remedies might be involved in treating your dog's condition. Everything from medical shampoos to topical creams and they must be maintained in order to control the problem. Some additional testing might be required such as checking your dog's hormonal levels to see if there are underlying problems.

Dogs are also prone to ringworms, which cause patchy hair loss and reddening of the skin with chaffing. If you suspect that your dog has ringworms, get him to the vet for treatment. Additionally, ringworms are extremely contagious so wash your hands after touching your dog's affected area.

Literature on these and other problems can be found in most pet stores in the pet dog supplies section. Why not be as informed as possible to help your dog or cat. If you notice symmetrical or patchy hair loss on your dog, seek help immediately to keep your pet healthy.

You are responsible for the health and welfare of your dog. Be diligent in their treatment if you notice any symptoms of alopecia. Don't let him suffer through without proper medical attention. - 31851

How To Walk Your Cat on A Leash

By Virginia Sutherland

Many folks who have been owned by cat would chuckle uncontrollably at the thought of putting a leash on it, just like a dog, and taking it for a walk around the neighborhood. Cats have their own opinion about things, and the idea of tying your cat to a piece of string and making her follow you may be one that is hard to believe.

Even considering the nature of the cat, many cat owners are happily walking their very happy cats on a harness, walking jacket or leash. It may sound impossible, but it can be done with some patience, (OK, maybe a LOT of patience) and your cat can get a whole new life, safely enjoying the outdoors and getting much needed exercise at the same time.

Training your cat to the leash is best done in small steps. First, allow the cat to get familiar with the leash by placing somewhere it can be sniffed and evaluated. Then, in baby steps, put the leash or walking jacket on your cat.

The first few times you take your cat outside on a leash will probably result in a freaked out cat, especially if your cat has always been an indoor cat and has never really ventured outside.

All the new sights, sounds, and smells are bound to be quite overwhelming to your cat, and this is where your immense patience has to come in.

Don't buy a leash that is designed for a small dog, but instead look into purchasing a leash or lead that is specifically designed with a cat in mind. These leads wrap around your cat, giving you control of the cat and keeping the cat from choking itself in a frantic attempt to get away.

Once kitty has gotten used to, or somewhat used to, wearing the harness at home, you can try to ad the leash. At this point many cats will have malfunction of their legs... or won't be able to walk straight. Not to worry, for most kitties the excitement and stimulation of being outside make them forget that they are on a leash.

If, after you have been taking very slowly, and your cat still, after you have progressed to actually going outside, still is scared after a few tries, then maybe this is not for your kitty.

Trying for some time in baby steps is the way to be successful, but there are cats who just won't have any part of this. Be observant. If your cat gets a little more comfortable each and every time, then continue taking her out. Short trips with lots of praise and treats.

You may be surprised that before long your cat will absolutely adore her outside adventures ans will get all excited any time you go anywhere near her leash... just like a ,,, er,,,dog :) - 31851

Your Dog's Misaligned Teeth

By Catherine V. Testaratti

There is a condition prone to puppies called malocclusion, which means that their bit does not fit right. This misalignment of the teeth is common and usually does not affect the dog's ability to eat. However, as the dog grows older, the condition can get worse or could correct itself.

Puppies have very sharp teeth and by the time they are 6 months old, they will have about 28 teeth. Into adulthood, your dog will have 42 teeth. Puppies are notorious for those sharp pointy teeth so it is best to monitor your small child's playtime with the puppy to avoid any accidents.

This condition has minimal risks to your dog but can cause some discomfort and infection if it is a severe case. Usually malocclusion affects the dog's ability to chew or pick up the food. Causes of this disorder are mouth injuries and wear on the teeth.

We have all heard of an overbite, underbite. You will notice this mostly when your dogs closes his mouth and his teeth do not meet which creates a gap. However, the scissor bite malocclusion is one that you will not see in the flat faced dog family.

The scissor bite is not something that you will find in all dogs. Boxers, Shih Tzus and Lhasa Apsos are some of the most common of the flat nose breed. Something you need to know when you are purchasing a purebred dog from this family.

Smaller gaps in puppies can usually correct themselves. If a dog is older than 10 months, then the gap is already set and you will need to seek the help of your vet to correct it. If it were not affecting the dogs eating or picking up, then I would not worry.

Your dog's overbite may worsen as the permanent teeth come in because they are larger and can damage the soft parts of the mouth. Teeth extractions are sometimes necessary. Just check with your vet if you are concerned or notice that the dog is not eating.

Severe cases might require intervention as we have said. Typically these conditions do not ever affect the dogs ability to eat and will not require any medical procedure. As of late though, people are opting for doggy braces to correct their dog's alignment issues. What is next, contact lens?

Many dog owners consider their dog a big part of their family. Be sure that they are vaccinated regularly to keep them protected from disease. They deserve to live a long and happy life with the rest of the family. - 31851

Use Your Favorite Dog, the Pug, On Your Bank Checks!

By Alan Plastin

Do you own a Pug? Do you think Pugs are the best dogs in the world? Are you looking for a way to make your bank checks more interesting? Why don't you consider purchasing Pug personal bank checks then?

In Old English, the word "pugg" means "playful little devil" and anyone who owns a Pug knows this to be true of their character. The Pug is a small dog but what it lacks in stature, it makes up for in style. Pugs are known for their short muzzled faces, serious facial expressions, curled tails, and soft snorting sounds.

Pugs have a long history of being pets. Pugs were bred to sit on the laps of the Chinese sovereigns during the Shang Dynasty. Even Tibetan monks kept them as pets. Frequently they are referred to as "Lion Dogs" due to the fact that they resemble the Chinese guard lions.

Later on in history, the Pug became the House of Orange's official dog when a Pug saved the Prince of Orange's life in 1572 by barking at an assassin. Goya painted Pugs in Spain and in Italy they were bedecked in matching pantaloons and jackets and rode by the coachmen of the wealthy. From time to time, they were employed as guard dogs and sometimes they were utilized by the military as trackers.

When confined at Les Carmes prison, Jospehine Bonaparte had her Pug transport concealed messages to her family. Painter William Hogarth's self-portrait, which now hangs in the Tate gallery, contains an image of him and his Pug, Trump. Queen Victoria even kept Pugs herself.

Pugs generally come in either black, silver, apricot or fawn and tend to have glossy coats that shed. Despite their serious exterior, they are very friendly and loving dogs which is one of the reasons they make great pets. In addition, they are extremely loyal to their owners and even require a great deal of attention. As for intelligence, they are ranked #57 in Stanley Coren's "The Intelligence of Dogs."

You might have a difficult time choosing which checks you want to get because there are a couple to choose from. One type of design has a photograph of an apricot Pug in a field of purple flowers. You can also get coordinating accessories to go with these checks.

You can also buy Gary Patterson Pug checks. This series shows an image of a Pug asking to be fed. These also come with coordinating accessories such as address labels, contact cards, and a checkbook cover. These must be bought separately, of course.

You can also give the Pug Savers money when you order your checks through their website. The proceeds from your checks will go to the foundation which was created to help Pugs who can be prone to several different types of diseases.

Pug Pros also offers the same incentive. However, with this company you can even have your own image of you and your Pug printed right onto the check itself. Again, proceeds will go toward the Pug saving organization.

Another option is the Pug checks by artist Linda Picken. These checks pay homage to the loyalty and compassion that the dogs show, through the eyes of the famous wildlife artist.

If you decide to buy Pug checks then remember that you can save up to 50% off the price that you might have paid at your bank when you buy them online. - 31851

Good News For Cat Owners! Flush The Litter!

By Ned Dagostino

If you're fed up of picking up the cat's litter and marching down the hall to the waste disposal then help is at hand! If the odor is making you sick, then help is at hand! Flushable cat litter provides the answer to these problems.

Flushable cat litter is laid in the litter box like ordinary litter. Whenever the cat uses the litter box, you can gather up the flushable litter and flush it down the hatch!

This kind of litter is finer than clumping clay. It is also about 3 times costlier than the ordinary clumping clay. On the positive side, you don't have to use as much flushing litter as the ordinary variety. If it is not available in the local area, there are plenty of suppliers on the Internet who will take your order and deliver it to your very own doorstep,

Environmentally speaking, the new product is as good or bad as the ordinary litter. One goes to a landfill; the other uses water and generates more sewage. If you are really interested in protecting the environment then you should choose the variety that can be composted once the dried stool is removed.

But before dumping the clumping clay, you ought to make sure that your cat likes the flushable litter. Most cats find it strange, and don't use the litter box with flushable litter. So keep watching your pet and the litter box to find out what your pet thinks of the new litter.

You can help your cat adjust to the new litter by mixing a little of the flushable litter with the ordinary litter. You won't be able to flush the mixture, of course! Just dispose of it as usual. Keep increasing the amount of flushable litter gradually, day by day. When you reach 100% flushable litter, then you can dispose of it in the flush.

Your cat may just not accept the flushable litter. Then you have no option but to continue as you are. However, if your cat gets used to the flushable litter, then you can expect an odorless and convenient experience.

The damage to the environment is similar whether you use the clumping clay or the flushable litter. You will definitely prefer the flushable litter to the ordinary variety. But you will have to go by what your pet says in this matter! - 31851

Finding and Selecting a Pet Boarding Facility

By Jen Newton

Isn't it great! You have a healthy pet that loves you and enjoys hanging around your home. What happens when you have to leave town for a few days? In the absense of kind friends who can board your pet while you are away, you have to come up with a good pet boarding facility to keep them while you are away.

Coming up with the best option for boarding your pet may take some time and effort. It isn't a good idea to just pick a place because it's cheap or easy to get to. First, check around and see if anyone you know can recommend a facility. Then, consider the tips below when making a final choice. Your pet's health and well-being is at stake.

Don't board your pet anywhere until you have personally visited and observed the conditions there. Some boarding facilities are filthy, poorly run, and represent a health hazard for your pet. Take some time to check out the cleanliness and general appearance of the operation.

Do not leave your pet at any facility which does not mandate proof of current vaccinations. This should include a worm check.

It's pretty common for veterinarians to provide a pet boarding facility as an add-on to their practice. You would think this would be the best choice, but don't count on it. The boarding is sometime just an afterthought that isn't given a lot of attention.

Consider this from your pet's perspective. If you were a cat or dog, how would you feel hanging out in a human hospital for a few days? Hospitals are what they are. They are places for sick and recovering pets. Your pet is probably will not have much fun staying in a veterinary hospital while you are away, nor are they likely to get the care and exercise they need.

Veterinary clinics in general are not set up to do a good job of boarding pets. Their staff is dedicated primarily to attending sick animals, and they are often highly stressed and overworked. Your healthy pet boarding in such a facility is more likely to just be left sitting in a small cage for extended periods.

While you are visiting different facilities, see if the animals are monitored and kept safe and secure while exercising or playing outdoors. They should not be left in any enclosed area without supervision for long periods of time. Observe all fencing and make sure it looks secure, with no holes or "easy to dig out" places at the bottom.

If you are boarding a cat, they should be contained in an area that is separated well from the dogs. Few things can stress out a normal cat worse than around the clock barking and howling! If you will be boarding a dog, be certain to find out how he will be cared for. How often will he be fed? Will he have regular outdoor play time? Will they give him his own healthy dog food that you bring from home?

Finally, the one intangible you need to look at. How do the people working at the pet boarding facility work with the pets? This is not an easy job and requires a special person with lots of patience and desire. If the workers seem hurried and stressed with their job, this is probably not the best managed environment for your pet.

Deciding on a place to leave your pets is an important decision. Keep all these things in mind when you make your choice. - 31851

Are You Hurting Your Animals' Feelings?

By James French

As a pet owner you can be helped in a number of ways with animal communication. Understanding your animal from their perspective allows you to give them the best life possible. It can be very easy to place our own thoughts and understanding on animals without really understanding them. This is why animal communication is a valuable pet owner tool.

Have you every been miss-judged by some one else, it not a nice feeling is it? Yet it is very easy for us to do exactly the same with our own animals and the result is that we place negative feelings with them.

For example the other day I saw how a dog had been labelled as a bully with other dogs. This strong judgement had been made because the owner had observed that when her dog was around younger or gentle dogs, she would look very friendly but when she got close would snap at them and show aggressive signs.

Her behaviour was completely different to nervous or protective dogs where she would leave them well alone.

Using animal communication it became very clear that her dog was desperate to be sociable with other dogs. The reason for the aggression was that she was afraid of the intimacy. Now it became clear why she was approaching the younger and gentle dogs. She was also very sensitive to other dogs feelings and this is why she did not want anything to do with nervous or protective dogs.

This feeling of wanting to be close, changed as soon as her nose got to close to another dogs. Replaced with this feeling of intense shyness and protection.

This new information was so different to what the owner thought was happening with her dogs social skills. That it allowed us to have a completely new approach, focused on helping her to overcome her shyness. Her dog was so keen to make friends that it made the process very effective when everyone was coming from the same perspective.

When we communicate clearly with our animals it gives a greater understanding. This is turn gives us the power to really help them. If you find your self repeatedly asking the question why do they do this or that? Then there is a high possibility that you are not understanding where they are really coming from.

Animal communication builds a trusting relationship. It is exactly the same for humans, when we find someone who understands us then it is easy to listen to them and trust them, as we can feel that they are there to help us. Because animal communication is so natural, it is very easy for anyone to learn the skills in a relatively short period of time! - 31851

Transfer Factor And Your Healty Immune System

By Lewis Culbreath

The immune system is in the news. It is what the transfer factor is all about. If we humans could improve our immune system then we would be less susceptible to illness and disease. The transfer factor is one way people are trying to improve their immunity system.

We can take supplements. Nothing wrong with that. But we have to realize that no matter how good a supplement is, it is simply that, a supplement. They do not create good health, supplements merely aid us to a healthier body. We have to do our part, more than popping pills is required of us.

No matter what supplement you take, you need to eat right and get proper sleep and get proper exercise. And unfortunately for some people if you have a family history of disease and illnesses then you are having the genes for that and no supplement is going to prevent that condition.

Next time you go to the supermarket see if you can make the connection. You read about the increase in cancer, diabetes, and heart disease in our society. Now to down the lane where the chips are sold. Then take a look at all the beer and liquor you can buy. Then look at the cupboards under lock and key where you can buy tobacco once you get the store manager to unlock the doors to their precious stash of cigarettes.

You will see why we are succumbing to illness and disease. How do our bodies stand a chance will all the junk we are putting in them? Oh and we have not even talked about the fast food joints you passed on your way to the supermarket. You know all those places where you can order cheese burgers, french fries, soda pop, and deep fried apple pie. And we do not even have to get out of our cars to have them. Simply drive through.

Want to know something that might keep you awake at night? More people are killed by drivers who fall asleep behind the wheel than people who are drunk behind the wheel. We are a society of people who watch television until one in the morning and then get up at six in the morning.

No supplement is going to cure your life of sleep of deprivation. Your body needs sleep. This is the time it repairs itself from sixteen hours of straight activity. Your immune system is like a fort. It is made up of strong walls.

But without proper diet, proper sleep, and proper exercise, those walls start showing signs of wear and tear. And as illness and disease constantly batter your wall of immunity they start wearing it down. Once your immunity wall breaks down, illness and disease makes it way into your system and breaks your walls down from within. Picture this in your mind and you will have an incentive to improve your life. Transfer factor is one of many supplements on the market. But the best way to improve your immunes system is to do more than take a pill. - 31851

A Healthy Pet Can Be in Pain and Not Show It

By Jen Newton

Congratulations! You are fortunate to own and have the companionship of a healthy pet. They seem active and healthy without a care in the world. You think there could be nothing wrong. Stop! Please take a moment to think about how animals are programmed by nature.

Since the beginning of time, most animals have been programmed to do whatever it takes to live with pain without making it obvious. The reason is obvious - other animals looking for food might make them their next meal if they sense they are weak or injured (easy to catch and kill). Given this, even your pampered indoor puppy might be hurting and not inclined to show it. You have to keep a close eye on your pets.

Watch how your pet acts and behaves. There are numerous indicators that their health isn't what it should be. Since they are used to, and for the most part, quietly dealing with pain they will in fact make an effort to conceal or minimize the effects of any pain they feel.

Carefully observe your pet's physical characteristics. Are they losing weight for no obvious reason? Are they chewing their food more slowly, or eating less than usual? This could indicate problems with their teeth or gums. Patches of hair missing, or an obvious dulling of their coat, could be signs of internal problems. You should know how a happy, healthy pet looks and acts. Watch carefully for deviations from this norm.

As strange as it sounds to some pet owners, your pet needs to have their teeth checked routinely. They get cavities and gum diseases just like we do. Neglecting this can lead to infections and pain that becomes very difficult to treat once it advances to a certain point.

Your pet's good health will be, in part, a direct result of their diet and exercise habits. Animals who gain too much weight, just like people, are at increased risk for medical problems. You have to watch your pet to see what is happening. If they have become sluggish and reluctant to exercise or play, this could be because of arthritis or another joint disease. These conditions produce a lot of pain, and may cause your pet to become far less active and unhealthy.

Losing unnecessary pounds will help your overweight pet decrease pressure of sore joints and reduce pain. Many excellent reduced fat or low calorie pet foods are made to assist with this.

Just because your normally healthy pet doesn't express pain through their eyes or vocally doesn't mean they are not hurting. You should watch for even small differences in their normal behavior. Having a strong awareness of your pet's normal habits can assist your pet's doctor in diagnosing and treating their pain. Be safe. If you notice any differences in your pet's normal routine, call your vet and discuss or take them in for an exam as soon as possible. - 31851
